چکیده

Single-armed, stationary density waves can exist even in disks with only weak selfgravity, provided that the rotation curve is dominated by a central mass. Such waves could play a significant role in the transport of angular momentum. By variational methods, we derive nonlinear versions of the dispersion relation, angular momentum flux, and propagation velocity in the tight-winding limit. The pitch angle increases with amplitude until the tight-winding approximation breaks down. By other methods, we find a series of nonlinear logarithmic spirals which is exact in the limit of small disk mass and which extends to large pitch angle. These waves may be supported by low-mass protoplanetary disks, and perhaps by compact molecular disks in galactic nuclei.

Application of the global modal approach to spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of th...

Hydrodynamic stability and mode coupling in Keplerian flows: local strato-rotational analysis

Aims. We present a qualitative analysis of key (but yet unappreciated) linear phenomena in stratified hydrodynamic Keplerian flows: (i) the occurrence of a vortex mode, as a consequence of strato-rotational balance, with its transient dynamics; (ii) the generation of spiral-density waves (also called inertia-gravity or gΩ waves) by the vortex mode through linear mode coupling in shear flows. Me...

Spiral density wave generation by vortices in Keplerian flows

We perform a detailed analytical and numerical study of the dynamics of perturbations (vor-tex/aperiodic mode, Rossby and spiral-density waves) in 2D compressible disks with a Keplerian law of rotation. We draw attention to the process of spiral-density wave generation from vortices, discussing, in particular, the initial, most peculiar stages of wave emission. We show that the linear phenomeno...

Rossby Wave Instability of Keplerian Accretion Disks

We find a linear instability of non-axisymmetric Rossby waves in a thin nonmagnetized Keplerian disk when there is a local maximum in the radial profile of a key function L(r) ≡ F(r)S2/Γ(r), where F−1 = ẑ · (∇× v)/Σ is the potential vorticity, S = P/ΣΓ is the entropy, Σ is the surface mass density, P is the vertically integrated pressure, and Γ is the adiabatic index. We consider in detail the ...

Radial Disk Heating by More than One Spiral Density Wave

We consider a differentially rotating, 2D stellar disk perturbed by two steady state spiral density waves moving at different patterns speeds. Our investigation is based on direct numerical integration of initially circular test-particle orbits. We examine a range of spiral strengths and spiral speeds and show that stars in this time dependent gravitational field can be heated (their random mot...
